Washington Square Arch

New York City

One of New York's most treasured landmarks, the Washington Square Arch, in New York’s Washington Square Park was first erected in wood in 1889 for the centennial celebration of George Washing-ton’s inauguration. Designed by Stanford White of McKim Mead & White, permanent construction was completed in 1895. After over a century, deterioration of the monu-ment and its sculptural elements mandated a comprehensive reconstruction and stabilization effort to insure its continued survival.

Our task included the complete conserv-ation and restoration of marble, stone, and brick masonry, accompanied by a comp-rehensive structural analysis of the entire Arch. Of major importance is the restoration of the interior Guastavino stair that provides access to spaces within the Arch and the roof. An exterior illumination campaign and site improvements were also implemented including drainage, paving, and fencing. It was completed in 2004 for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.
