The Queens Borough Public Library

Queens, NY

The Master Plan for the Queens Borough Public Library was undertaken to facilitate the reorganization and expansion of the existing central library building. The masterplan examines the relocation of the library’s administrative departments from their current location to a new facility. It includes a new state-of-the-art Business, Industry, & Bio-Medical Arts Science Center, equipped with conference facilities and an auditorium to accommodate 500 persons.

The proposed site for this new facility was the former location of the original Central Library, which dates back to 1928. Used as a courthouse for the past 30 years, this 73,800 s.f. building will undergo a complete restoration and renovation. A new 187,600 sf addition will be designed to accommo-date the growing information needs of our science, government, and business com-munities. This proposed complex will add a vital community resource to businesses and industry in New York City and support the program goals of the QBPL into the next millennium. Planning study was completed in 2000.
